一部翻译文学经典的诞生

——傅雷逝世40周年纪念

    摘　要：从《约翰·克利斯朵夫》的两个特点即音乐性和长河小说结构出发，通过傅雷和敬隐渔两人的译文和个人素养的比较揭示：要把这部外国文学经典变成翻译文学经典，译者不仅要具备应有的基本条件：如对出发语和译入语的熟练掌握，对作者及其作品准确的理解和深刻的领悟，以及诉诸理解和领悟于文字的恰当的表达；还需要具有堪与作者比肩的艺术修养、激情姿态和持久毅力，后三者同样是构成成功翻译这部外国文学经典不可或缺的重要条件。

    The Birth of a Classic of Literary Translation: In Memory of the 40th Anniversary of Fu Lei’s Death

    Abstract: With reference to the two defining characteristics of Rolland’s Jean Christophe, i.e., the musicality of its language and its long-series structure, and using fellow translator Jing Yinyu’s case as a foil for Fu Lei and his Chinese translation of the novel, this essay argues that the late master translator’s competence, understood conventionally in terms of his command of the languages concerned or his accurate understanding and deep appreciation of the original work, does not in itself lead to truly great literary translation. To turn a literary masterpiece into a classic of literary translation, the translator should be just as artistically gifted, passionate and persevering as the original author.
