理据、约定和翻译的关系

摘 要：语言符号的任意性和理据性长期以来一直是语言哲学争论的问题。本文通过英汉语比较分析了两种语言的任意性和理据性的不同倾向，探讨了语言的约定俗成性对外来词或新表达式的影响，指出由于语言具有任意性，所以在目的语出现概念空缺以及没有同形义异词语的情况下可采用“异化法”来引进新的表达式，而新的表达式也只有在约定俗成的前提下才具有生命力。

Motivation, Convention in Translational Perspectives

Abstract: The paper bases its discussion of translation on the philosophical controversy of arbitrary and natural property of linguistic signs. It makes a contrastive study of English and Chinese in terms of their characterized tendency toward arbitrariness(non-motivatedness) or naturalness. Having examined the impact convention has on introducing into the target language new words or constructions both non-motivated or motivated, the author points out that arbitrariness of language promises a successful foreignized performance when there is no pre-existing concept in the TL or no counterpart signifier that works on a different motivational base from the SL. And the vigor of a foreignized expression lies on convention and its acceptability.
