Theorizing Translatology: Toward an Interdisciplinary Approach
Wang Ning
(Department of Foreign Languages, Tsinghua University, Beijing 100084, China)
Abstract: Although translation scholars by and large have claimed a disciplinary status for their own studies, translatology has yet to be granted the same kind of legitimacy as has been enjoyed by the more established disciplines. To clarify the way translatology is, or ought to be, positioned within the academic formation is therefore of significant current interests. The author of this article maintains that as an area of studies located where natural sciences, social sciences and the humanities meet, translatology partakes of both contrastive linguistics, comparative literature and cultural studies but belongs to none. It should have as its own object of research all the phenomena in the practice and thematization of translation and interpreting. Its methodology should be pluralistic: either aesthetic, critical, or empirical/scientific. And given the acceleration of the on-going globalizing process, its function is necessarily expanding.
